Home / About

Turmeric has varieties. Almost nobody sells it that way.

We work out of the Armoor belt in Nizamabad — the part of Telangana that has grown turmeric for generations. We keep ten varieties separate, name them, and sell the corn, millets, pulses and oilseeds that come off the same land.

The reason

"Haldi" is not a specification

Ask for turmeric anywhere and you get a yellow powder with no variety attached. But Lakadong and Rajapuri are not the same crop in any way that matters — different curcumin, different colour, different rhizome, different price. Blending them and calling the result turmeric loses the only information a serious buyer needs.

So we keep the lots apart from lifting through to packing, and we tell you which one you're buying. If you want potency we'll point you at one group; if you want bold fingers for grinding, another.

The ten

What each variety is known for

🫚
Jaintia Hills, MeghalayaLakadong

The best-known high-curcumin turmeric in the country, and the reason buyers started asking about percentages at all.

🫚
Bihar & TelanganaRajendra Sonia · Pragati

Two released varieties bred for curcumin. Pragati holds yield alongside it, which is why it spread through the belt quickly.

🫚
Tamil Nadu & MaharashtraBSR-2 · NDH

Yield varieties with even, bold fingers. Both also move as seed rhizome to farmers planting the next crop.

🫚
Sangli & SalemRajapuri · Salem

The traditional trade varieties — Rajapuri for the size of its mother rhizome, Salem for the bright colour the market grew up on.

📍
Armoor, NizamabadArmoor Local

The landrace of our own belt. Not bred for anything in particular — just what has been grown and replanted here for generations.

⚫
The two that aren't cooking turmericBlack Turmeric · Mango Ginger

Curcuma caesia and Curcuma amada. One is rare and mostly medicinal or ritual; the other smells of raw mango and goes into pickle.

How lots are handled

Keeping varieties apart

None of this is complicated. It just has to be done consistently, which is where most of the trade falls down.

Lifted variety-wise

Each variety comes off its own plot and stays in its own heap from the day it is lifted.

Boiled and dried separately

Drying behaviour differs by variety, so batches are never combined to fill a yard.

Cleaned and graded

Sorted for size and damage before packing, so what you open matches the sample you saw.

Labelled by variety and lot

The variety and lot travel with the pack, so a query can always be traced back.

Want a sample before you commit?

For bulk enquiries we will send a sample of the variety you are considering, so you can check colour, size and smell against your own standard before ordering a lot.
